Child benefits

Child benefits for yourself

If you are an international student, staying in Belgium temporarily because of your studies, your eligibility for child benefits depends on where you are domiciled, in Flanders or in Brussels.

  • you are domiciled in Flanders: you are not entitled to child benefits for yourself
  • you are domiciled in Brussels: you are entitled to child benefits, if you fulfill the following conditions:
    • you are not yet 25 years old
    • you are registered for at least 27 credits; the enrolment (or the first enrolment if you get 27 credits through several enrolments) must take place by 30 November.
    • you don’t work more than 240 hours per quarter; an exception is the third quarter (from July to September): during this period, you can work more than 240 hours without losing child benefits, provided that you continue your studies after the summer vacation.

Child benefits for your children

If you are an international student, staying in Belgium temporarily because of your studies, you can receive child benefits for the children living with you, on the condition that they are authorized to reside in Belgium.
This right is granted until the child turns 18. Once 18, he or she is still entitled to child benefits until the age of 25 if certain study conditions are met (registered for at least 27 credits or 13 hours of classes; not working too much).
The benefits consist of a birth allowance which can be claimed on or after the 6th month of pregnancy and a monthly child benefit payment. Children with a handicap are entitled to higher payments until the age of 21.
